Long Island periodontist, Dr. Alan H. Farber, discusses some of the signs and symptoms one can look for when determining the existence of gum disease. Some of these indicators include:

bleeding gums (when eating, brushing, flossing)
loose teeth
soreness in the mouth
recession
longer looking teeth
bad breath (frequent symptom)

Gum disease is sometimes referred to as the "silent disease" because some patients do not have any symptoms at all. Dr. Farber explains that he often correlates this type of condition with high blood pressure. You may not have any apparent symptoms, but seeing a specialist will help you determine that for certain.
