Preparing for the 5-Year Lookback

The infamous lookback period keeps many families up at night. What happens my assets attempt to be recovered, or worse they are recovered? How can I protect myself and my family against Medicaid recovery?

Currently, the five-year lookback period is synonymous with Nursing Home Medicaid applications. Families are often concerned about this lookback period for a number of reasons.

You have heard horror stories about families having a lien on their homes or a large bill that drains their assets and their children's inheritance.
They have made recent outright transfers or gifts that may incur penalties.
They have heard they do not qualify for Medicaid but their savings are running low

You might be thinking I do not need a nursing home right now or Community Medicaid does not have a look-back period, why should I be concerned? While that may be true, the laws surrounding Community Medicaid are subject to change. You may not need the care now but what about in five to ten years? Planning ahead is crucial to receive the care you need and prevent being a victim of Medicaid recovery.
