During my research into the death of my great-uncle (11th Royal Fusiliers) during the defence of the Crozat Canal on March 23rd 1918, I read a number of German regimental histories so I could get their perspective about the canal assault. A number of these books contain interesting and sometimes amusing little episodes. This one tells the story of a regiment of Prussian grenadiers, and how one of their number took a suicidal risk just to rescue 3 mules from a hail of British artillery and machine-gun fire.
