An old, lesser-known German Christmas carol. The text was written by Georg Christian Dieffenbach (1822–1901), the music is by Bathasar Spieß.

Text:
Im Walde steht ein Tannenbaum
mit Nadeln spitz und fein
damit näht sich der Distelfink
sein buntes Röckelein

Er stehet da, so kerzengrad
Und grün ist stets sein Kleid
Im Frühling und im Sommer wohl
Und auch zur Winterzeit.

Christkindchen schickt durch Schnee und Eis
Herrn Niklaus dann hinaus
Der schneidet ab den Tannenbaum
Und nimmt ihn mit nach Haus

Christkindchen hängt mit zarter Hand
Viel Nüss und Äpfel dran
Und Lichtlein steckt´s auf jeden Zweig
Dazu auch Marzipan

Und kommt die liebe Weihnachtszeit
Da klingelt die Mama
Wie steht der grüne Tannenbaum
So bunt und helle da

Du Tannenbaum im dunklen Wald
Bald wirst du abgestutzt
Drum freue dich, dann wirst du auch
Gar herrlich aufgeputzt

There is a fir tree in the forest
with needles pointed and fine
the goldfinch sews itself with it
its colorful skirt

It's standing there like a candle
And its dress is always green
In spring and summer
And also in winter time.

Christ Child sends through snow and ice
Saint Nicholas out then
He cuts off the Christmas tree
And takes it home

Christ child hangs with a tender hand
Lots of nuts and apples on it
And it puts a light on every branch
And also marzipan

And when the dear Christmas season comes
Then mum rings the bell
How is the green fir tree standing
So colorful and bright there

You fir tree in the dark forest
Soon you will be cut off
So be happy, then you will be
Splendidly adorned, too
