The Spirit Guide: How to pronounce Samhain (Samhuinn) & Irish & Scottish Traditions found Today!

Описание к видео The Spirit Guide: How to pronounce Samhain (Samhuinn) & Irish & Scottish Traditions found Today!

The Celtic celebration of Samhain (Samhuinn) and modern-day Halloween come from traditions that date all the way back to the Gauls. This video covers the things you've heard about (bobbing for apples, "apple snap," Trick or Treating, and Halloween costumes (mummers and guisers). We touch on the Christian spin of All Hallow's Eve (which eventually became pronounced Halloween), All Saints Day, and All Souls Day.

Many world cultures celebrate Samhain in some way, as the sun was considered "dying" and the long winters approached. There are many myths and folklore around what happened when the sun died and was then returned in Spring, but those stories are for another day ;)

It's important to remember that Samhain actually begins on the eve (sunset) of October 31 and ends at sunset on November 1. It's a fire festival (Feis na Samhain) where the Druids would light the ceremonial fire, and you would extinguish your fires at home and relight them with the fire from the Druidic Ceremonial fire. To carry those flames home, you'd hollow out a root vegetable (turnip, potato, beet) and place the fire in there for safe travel back to the home. The fire festival was probably the last large Ceilidh of the year before the weather didn't permit people to travel from house to house.
