আমাদের সমাজের অধিকাংশ মানুষ ছেলে সন্তান চায়। মেয়ে সন্তান অনাকাঙ্খিত। কারণ পুরুষ মানেই পরিবার ও সমাজের কর্তা। আর পুরুষের কর্তৃত্ব, প্রভুত্বকে মান্য করে নারী। সামাজিক রীতি অনুসারে, মেয়ে বিয়ে করে অন্য একটি পরিবারে চলে যায়। সমাজের সকল অসঙ্গতি মেনে নিয়ে সংসার করে। আর ছেলে সন্তান পরিবারের হাল ধরে। সম্পত্তির উত্তরাধিকার হয়। বৃদ্ধ বাবা মাকে দেখে। এই ধরনের চিন্তার ভিত্তিতেই সমাজে নারী, পুরুষের অবস্থান।

স্বাভাবিকভাবেই প্রশ্ন আসে আসলেই কি মেয়েরা পরিবারের অর্থনৈতিক বিষয়টি দেখভাল করতে পারে না? বৃদ্ধ বাবা মায়ের দায়িত্ব নিতে পারে না? নাকি তাদের এসব করতে দেওয়া হয় না?

যুগ যুগ ধরে সমাজে পুরুষতান্ত্রিকতা বিদ্যমান। কর্তৃত্ব যেন পুরুষের হাতে থাকে এজন্য সামাজিক, অর্থনৈতিক সমস্ত ক্ষেত্রে নারীকে অবদমিত করে রাখা হয়েছে। অধিকাংশ পরিবারে ছেলে সন্তানকে বেশি সুযোগ ও স্বাধীনতা দিয়ে বড় করা হয়। আর মেয়ের ক্ষেত্রে থাকে নানা ধরনের নিষেধাজ্ঞা। কারণ ছেলে সন্তান ভবিষ্যতে পরিবারের দায়িত্ব নেবে, এই ভাবনা থেকে ছেলের আবদারগুলো ইতিবাচকভাবে দেখা হয়।অনেকের মতে, এখন পরিস্থিতি অনেক পাল্টে গেছে। কিছু পরিবার এখন ছেলেমেয়ের মধ্যে পার্থক্য করে না। তবুও বেশিরভাগ মানুষ এখনও ছেলে সন্তান হলেই বেশি খুশি হয়। মেয়ে সন্তানকে হয়ত সরাসরি অবহেলা করেন না লোকলজ্জায়। তখন তারা ছেলে হলে খুশি হয় কিন্তু মেয়ে হলে মেনে নেয়।
মনে করা হয়, ছেলেরা হলো বংশের প্রদীপ। বংশের ধারক ও বাহক হলো পুরুষ। পুরুষতান্ত্রিক ক্ষমতা পুরুষের হাতে থাকবে। বাবার ক্ষমতা যাবে ছেলের কাছে, ছেলের ক্ষমতা তার ছেলের কাছে। এইভাবেই সমাজের পতি থাকবে পুরুষরা। সমাজের প্রতিনিধি মেয়ে হতে পারে না। সামাজিক কিংবা পারিবারিক ক্ষেত্রে মেয়েদের মতামতের কোন মূল্য নেই। তাছাড়া সামাজিক কাজেও ছেলেরাই ভূমিকা পালন করে। এই ধরনের চিন্তা থেকেও ছেলে সন্তানের প্রতি গুরুত্ব দেওয়া হয়।
কিন্তু বর্তমান সময়ের ছেলে সন্তান এবং মেয়ের সন্তানের মধ্যে খুব একটা পার্থক্য দেখা যায় না। বরং উভয় সন্তানি পরিবারের মর্যাদা বৃদ্ধিতে সহায়ক ভূমিকা পালন করে।
In our society, the majority of people prefer male children. Female children are often considered unwanted. This is because a male is seen as the head of the family and society, with authority and power. According to social customs, a female gets married and leaves her family to join another, where she endures societal norms and responsibilities. On the other hand, a male child is expected to take responsibility for the family, inherit property, and care for elderly parents. This mindset has shaped the roles of men and women in society.

Naturally, the question arises: can women not manage the financial aspects of the family? Can they not take care of elderly parents, or is it simply that they are not allowed to?

Patriarchy has existed in society for centuries. To maintain male dominance, women have been suppressed in all social and economic aspects. In most families, male children are raised with more opportunities and freedom, while girls face numerous restrictions. This is because it is believed that a male child will eventually take responsibility for the family. As a result, their demands are often viewed positively.

Many argue that things have changed over time. Some families no longer differentiate between sons and daughters. However, the majority still feel more joy when they have a male child. Although they may not directly neglect their daughters due to social shame, they accept a daughter in the family, but their preference remains for a son.

It is believed that males are the light of the family and the bearers of the family lineage. Male authority remains in the hands of men, with power passing from father to son, and from son to grandson. In this way, men continue to dominate society. Women are not considered representatives of society, and their opinions hold little value in family or social matters. Moreover, men continue to play a significant role in social affairs. This is why male children are prioritized in many households.

However, in today's world, the differences between male and female children are becoming less noticeable. Both sons and daughters play an equal role in enhancing the family's dignity and status.
