Paris attorney Jacques Verges took international ambulance chasing to storied heights or lows. He represented some of the most reprehensible clients, many convicted of crimes against humanity. Amongst his notable roster included Klaus Barbie The Butcher of Lyon, Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge, Carlos the Jackal, Idi Amin, and numerous other killers, undesirable personalities and unpopular causes.

None of these clients would be acquitted. His primary motivation appeared to be a public forum to espouse their respective causes or simply defend their right to representation. The irony that so many of his clients were responsible for the collective deaths of thousands seemed lost amidst his judicial pleas for leniency and mercy. Many observers simply concluded that his role was self-serving to publicize himself and his law practice, absent of principles. He would be labeled in a film The Advocate of Terror.

His personal life was most noteworthy for an eight-year absence between February 1970 until 1978. He refused to offer an explanation for his whereabouts that led to significant speculation.

His initial high profile case involved a woman he would later marry and abandon. She planted a bomb inside an Algiers café during the Algerian War of Independence during the 1950s. The bomb would kill eleven people. She would later be pardoned and released.

His own death on August 15, 2013 at the age of 88 was ironically inside the same residence as the 18th century writer Voltaire. The wit, wisdom and satire of the controversial Voltaire remains lacking and missed in contemporary society. The warped hatred ideology represented by Jacques Verges, an advocate for terror is not.
