Create a Canyon in Your Traditional O-gauge Model Train Layout 2020 -
In this video, I’m going to show you how to turn a model railroad operating well into a scenic canyon to add realism to your layout. I’m building and expanding my Lionel Polar Express Model Railroad Layout in traditional O-gauge. Turning an operating well into a canyon will improve the appearance of the layout significantly. It will also provide additional square feet of surface area to reinforce the theme of the layout. For my Polar Express layout, the theme is the Christmas season in the northern United States. So I’m using a lot of white surfaces to simulate snow. I'm painting the XPS foam with white primer to provide a backdrop for additional "snow-scaping." In addition, the trees and brush on my layout appear as they would in a northern winter. More surface area to model means more opportunity to create the winter scene that I’m going for.

I’m making the canyon walls just a little higher than the sides of the operating well, so that I can lean them against the table top, and so that they’ll slant slightly inward from top to bottom. The primary material I’m using is XPS foam insulation board. XPS stands for Expanded Polystyrene. Insulation board like this is available form most building supply stores. I bought my materials at Home Depot. The first step is cutting the foam board to the right size. My XPS foam boards are pink, with black printing on them. I need to paint the XPS to hide the pink color, and change the appearance to match the winter scene I’m going for. Canyon walls need to appear rocky. After I've painted the XPS white, I'll add plaster rocks to them. I'll also add some winter vegetation.

Since I need to be able to move some of the XPS sheets that comprise the canyon walls, I'm only attaching them in a few places. I'll double-up the XPS foam in a few places to add contours and relief to the canyon walls. It will take me several weeks to totally complete this project. Once I have the canyon completed, I'll do another video to share it with you.
