It feels like season 1 handled his backstory and trauma, and now season 2 is set on showcasing the consequences and the effects of how people behaved toward him. That greatly influences his actions: dracarys, burning his brother, and then almost killing his brother again with a sword. Aemond does all he can to get the throne for himself.
