Placement is one of the most confusing concepts in singing. Why?

Because everyone feels the vibrations and resonance of singing slightly differently

For instance, some people feel that they can place the tone forward, back, nasal, oral, in their head in their chest [show crazy diagram with notes coming out of skull]

Which is correct?

Whichever one sounds the best and is the easiest to produce

When people ask about the correct placement for singing, I’ve found that there are a few best practices which help people find the best sound for their voice

This comes from teaching over 1,000 singers in private lessons and won’t be true for everyone, but many of these guidelines come from my own experience

In general, I would say that placement correlates pretty closely with the position of the tongue and larynx as well as the register that’s being sung in

And if we can make sure that all of these systems are aligned and in balance, then I don’t care where you feel that the tone is placed, it will still sound good.

So what are the best practices for sounding your best?
1) Keep the tongue forward touching the bottom front teeth at the gumline. This is true for most front vowels--”Ae”, “Eh”, “Ay” and “ee”
2) Keep the larynx balanced so that it’s not too high or too low
3) Traditionally, chest voice feels placed in the chest, forward and throaty
4) Head voice feels placed in the back of the head, back of the throat, neck or even nasal
5) Mixed voice can feel a bit nasal or throaty
