One of Brody’s favorite birds is making its debut on Backyard Bugs with Brody! We’re talking about the Eastern Bluebird. These bright, beautiful birds are a backyard treasure, and Brody’s been hoping to host a pair ever since he started noticing them swooping through the neighborhood.

In this episode, Brody is especially excited to show off a birdhouse that his sister Keira built. They mounted it in a quiet corner of the yard, and sure enough, just a few weeks later, a pair of Eastern Bluebirds moved in and started building a nest! Brody and his sister watched the birds everyday waiting to see babies.

But then came the trouble: House Sparrows. These invasive birds are a serious threat to native species like the Eastern Bluebird. They’re known to take over nests, destroy eggs, and even harm adult birds. That’s exactly what happened in Keira’s birdhouse. The House Sparrows pushed out the Bluebirds and took over the nest. It was tough to watch, but Brody learned an important lesson about protecting native birds from aggressive species.

Now, Brody is already planning for next spring. He and Keira are going to make a few upgrades to Keira’s birdhouse to help keep the sparrows out. First, he’s shrinking the entrance hole to just 1 3/8 inches, that’s big enough for bluebirds, but too small for sparrows. He’s also adding a mesh wire sparrow guard to the front, giving the bluebirds a safer place to nest.

Eastern Bluebirds (Sialia sialis) are small thrushes known for their vivid blue feathers and rusty red chests. Males are the brightest, while females have more muted tones. They love open spaces and fields with scattered trees and are often seen hunting insects from fence posts or branches. In spring and summer, they raise several broods of chicks, laying pale blue eggs in nests made from grasses and pine needles.

These birds are a conservation success story, thanks in part to people like Brody (and Keira!) who put up and monitor nest boxes. With help from backyard birders, their numbers have bounced back after years of decline caused by habitat loss and competition from invasive species like House Sparrows and European Starlings.
