Scratch Acid was an American post-hardcore/noise rock band from Austin, Texas, formed in 1982. One of the pioneers of noise rock in the 1980s, the band is best remembered as a stepping stone for its frontman David Yow, and bass player David Wm. Sims, both later of The Jesus Lizard. The band was named by music journalist Will Lerner as "the American equivalent of the Birthday Party." After developing a reputation as a crazy, noisy punk band, Scratch Acid disbanded in 1987.

Scratch Acid is the self-titled debut by the Austin, Texas noise rock band Scratch Acid. It was only released on vinyl, but now can be found as the first 8 tracks on the compilation album The Greatest Gift. Kurt Cobain consistently put the album in his "favorite albums" lists in his Journals. Scratch Acid reached #26 in the UK Indie Chart.

David Yow told Songfacts:
[Laughing] Wowee. Whew. Wow. I think that’s the first song I ever wrote. I wrote the music and the lyrics to that. I had been in a punk rock band before that, and my girlfriend, Carla, who was just a sweet, wonderful, beautiful girl, had dumped me.
A few of the songs on that first Scratch Acid record are kind of about her and Cannibal is one of them. I mean, after she dumped me, I just felt sick for so long. I had headaches, I had stomachaches. My heart was broken.
