The “Spirit of the Ball” took to the Western Side of Fiji as it travelled through Viti Levu, speaking on the 17 MDG’s specifically, Gender Equality and Climate Change.
The team visited two coastal villages, Tavua Levu Village and Nasama Village, Tikina o Sigatoka and were specifically chosen by The LMMA Network because they were heavily reliant on the sea for survival and were “sporting villages”.
The first village, Tavua Levu, was a fishing village and its women had a vibrant fishing community, with other women from neighboring villages. The fishing activity, not only fed the village but was also sold for livelihood purposes.
They spoke in length of what they faced on a daily basis because of climate change and how they hoped to make these changes, enforcing it with their pledge through the ball.
The second village, Nasama Village, had a vibrant youth group that had its own farm, a successful ridge to reef program and successful rugby program.
Through the LMMA Network, The Ball was also hosted at the famous Sand Dunes in Sigatoka by Champion Rugby Team, The Nadroga Rugby Union.
This was an eye-opener for most of the participants as most were introduced to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and we managed to get the pledges of students at Tavua District School
Minister for Lands, Mr Filimoni Vosarogo and Former All Blacks Joe Rokocoko, added to the list of famous locals that pledged with the spirit of football.
