For over three centuries, Waguv weaving has been woven into the heart of Kashmiri culture — a time-honored tradition using reeds (Typha angustifolia) and rice straw to create mats that are warm in winter, cool in summer, and even believed to aid in better sleep and pain relief.

But today, this eco-friendly, handmade alternative to synthetic flooring is vanishing.

In the village of Khojbagh, Maloora (Srinagar), around 300 families still carry forward this ancient art. While men harvest natural materials from lakes and wetlands, women come together in communal spaces to weave each mat by hand — a living legacy of community, sustainability, and craftsmanship.
