Mainak Nag Chowdhury, popularly known as "Bumpy," is a prominent bass player, music composer, and music educator based in Kolkata. He is widely regarded as one of India's leading bassists, known for his work across diverse genres including Indian Classical, Carnatic, Jazz, and Latin music.
Training and Education
Mainak is a disciple of several master musicians, including mridangist Pt. S. Shekhar, the late R. Visweswaran (Kalaimammani awardee), and sarod player Pratyush Banerjee. He also offers online lessons on bass guitar for aspiring musicians.
Musical Career and Expertise
• Performance & Composition: He is a master of the bass guitar and has worked extensively as a music producer, arranger, and director. He even created his own signature series of double-neck bass guitars called Maitrayee Basses.
• Global Presence: Mainak has performed internationally in countries such as the USA, UK, Germany, France, China, and the UAE.
Key Projects:
o Kendraka: He is a founding member and the primary composer for this acclaimed Indo-Jazz fusion band.
o Film Work: He has contributed to the music departments of several notable films, including 22 Shey Shraban (2011), Mishawr Rawhoshyo (2013), and Shatru (2011).
o Collaborations: He frequently performs with various ensembles and artists, recently appearing with the Orient Express and filling in for the rock band Lakkhichhara. He recently joined the Grassy Strings family as their bassist.
