Elevated Blood Lead in Young Children Due to Lead-Contaminated Drinking Water: Washington, DC, 2001−2004

ES&T's top science paper is the investigation led by Marc Edwards of Virginia Tech into human health impacts from Washington, DC's 2000 switch from using chlorine to chloramines as a water disinfectant (Environ. Sci. Technol. DOI 10.1021/es802789w). Edwards and his colleagues used data collected by the city's Children's National Medical Center to reveal that the switch triggered a major jump between 2001 and 2003 in the incidence of high levels of lead in the blood of children under 16 months of age.
