Transcript:
Effective January 1, 2018, a new state law will assist drivers who are deaf or hard of hearing and the law enforcement community.

A person who is deaf or hard of hearing may apply to the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles to have an international symbol added to their driver license that will notify law enforcement agents across the state that they are deaf or hard of hearing.

The symbol will also be visible electronically to law enforcement agents to ensure mutually safe interactions between law enforcement officers and those who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Adding this symbol is voluntary. Drivers who want it must have a DMV Hearing Loss Determination Form (https://www.ncdot.gov/download/dmv/he...) completed by one of the professionals listed on the form.

Once completed and signed, the form should be turned in at a driver license office. Driver license examiners will have the symbol added to the person’s license for the cost of a duplicate license ($13) and mailed to the driver.

To have the symbol removed, drivers may make the request using the online duplicate license transaction, or supply a written request for removal by mail or in person at any driver license office.
