Описание к видео The Gilded Age Mansion That Drowned with the Titanic | Astor Courts

Discover the tragic story of Astor Courts, the $8 million pleasure palace cursed from the day it opened. When John Jacob Astor IV commissioned Stanford White to build America's most extravagant sports complex in 1902—complete with heated marble pools and vaulted tennis courts—he envisioned a playground for his son. Instead, the architect was murdered four years later. The father drowned on the Titanic six years after that. And the son who inherited everything lived there alone through three failed marriages and died childless.
Vincent Astor demolished his family's mansion because his second wife hated looking at it, then moved into his father's sports pavilion—a building designed for weekend guests. When he died in 1959, he left his entire fortune to strangers and the palace became a nursing home, where 328 elderly residents spent their final years in rooms built for celebration.
