This episode is continuing the drive through Pripyat Town, inside the Special Exclusion Zone, only 3kms from the #Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and Reactor Number 4.

Its very surreal driving slowly through the paved and unpaved roads of Pripyat which used to be a town of over 50,000 people. Especially at dusk as the sun was setting at the end of Autumn and the temperature getting pretty cold. Just added to the feeling of intrigue yet complete desolation and ghostliness of the place.

Apart from a couple of other tour operators and a few remaining tourists, it was deserted and empty with the buildings and streets reclaimed by nature. Max my awesome guide, kept stopping to show original pictures pre-evacuation against what you see currently, to highlight the difference.

In this video we drive to the iconic Ferris Wheel and Pripyat theme park that stands empty ready to accept its passengers and residents that never came! I think that's what attracts people so much to the Ferris Wheel, as it is such a symbol of normalcy, fun and family among the disaster that happened there and it provides that contrast. Also not sure how many people know, but the fun park never opened officially, it was scheduled to open 1 week after the disaster and was only ever tested with a few people. That makes it all the more sad, that it was ready for its residents and kids, to make them happy and that never happened.

We also drove and parked on Kurchatova Street in the courtyard parking area in front of the Palace of Culture and the Polissya Hotel, two other icons of Pripyat. Walking around here the dosimeter regularly reminds you that the radiation level is slightly elevated and about four to five times higher than standing 50m from the new confinement structure over Reactor 4.

I can understand why people say they get hooked on Chernobyl and Pripyat, as it was the site of something the world had never experienced and has never experienced since except for Fukushima, which is not in the same league as Chernobyl. The fact that a whole town of 50,000 people was just shipped out within a few hours and left everything behind and the town was left lifeless since that time, is just captivating.
