Another diphthong sound is the /Əʊ/ sound which also has two
single vowel sounds joined together to make the one sound.

To
make the /Əʊ/ sound, you start with the single /Ə/ sound and the
single /ʊ/ sound. You move from the /Ə/ sound to the /ʊ/ sound –
your voice glides from the first (1st) to the second (2nd) sound.

You
say and hold the first sound /Ə/ and then say the second sound /ʊ/
quickly, as a short sound.

When you say the /Əʊ/ sound, you want
to say about 60% of the /Ə/ sound and about 40% of the /ʊ/ sound.

You need to make sure that you do arrive at (say) the second
sound, /ʊ/. When you end with the /ʊ/ sound, your lips are rounded
– you push your lips together a little to make a circle, not a tight
circle, but a relaxed circle.

So, what we do when we make this
sound is, we take the /Ə/ sound and put it together with the /ʊ/ and
end up saying a new sound, /Əʊ/.
