Distributed applications are hard to monitor. Being on top of dashboards and logs when you are working with distributed applications can be imposible after a few microservices are deployed and the application starts to get traffic.

Alarms are fundamental to know how you application is doing. Alarms allow you to automatically monitor your application and you just need to get involved when something went out of control.

Most of AWS Services produces out of the box metrics that provide a lot of insightful information about the service, they provide metrics on when the service is behaving good and also bad.

Amazon Cloudwatch is the native monitoring and observability service from AWS. It provides a lot of insights from your applications and helps you to understand the health of your systems.

Cloudwatch collects metrics, logs and events from your services and operations and it gives you a unified view of your applications on AWS and on premise.

Cloudwatch has a lot of functionalities but in this video i want to focus on the alarms. If you want another video with more info about cloudwatch let me know in the comments box.

Amazon Cloudwatch alarms are great, you can create them over any metric and create different actions from them, like calling a Lambda function or sending an email. In this video we are going to talk more about them and I will show you a demo on how to configure one with AWS SAM and Cloudformation
