Training with a “live blade” is great if you're practicing tameshigiri. or cutting. However, when it comes to partner practice it can be a little dangerous and likely to quickly run out of training partners. So the Japanese used Bokken, simple wooden swords as training weapons to improve their skills with a lot less injuries. Over the years, Red Oak Bokken and White Oak Bokken have become the standard for wooden bokken but there are many varieties. The hardest varieties are made from extremely tough wood including the Japanese Green Oak. This nowadays is very expensive and Coldsteel have developed a synthetic substitute.
