Described by Wilfrid Mellers* as the “subtlest and funniest” of a “number of neat, witty pieces” from “Pièces de Clavecin”, 6th Suite, Second Book (published 1717), “Le Moucheron” (The Gnat) depicts the annoying circling and buzzing of a summer gnat, mosquito or fly! Here Couperin le Grand creates a vivid musical picture, with chains of trills and mordants in the left hand and a right-hand line which “exasperatingly dances around itself”.
