A ceremony at the Chattanooga Post Office Tuesday morning honored one man's 50 years of service. It's an award that only two letter carriers at the Chattanooga Post Office have received in the past four years.

Dennis Holland began working at the Chattanooga Post Office when stamps cost four or five cents and his hourly salary was $2.62.

"When I first started at Highland Park there were only two vehicles in the whole station. The rest of us had walking routes," said Holland.

For 50 years Holland walked, scootered, and drove the mail all around Chattanooga. On Tuesday, family, friends, and fellow letter carriers honored him with the 50 year Federal Service Award Pin.

"I've seen families move from house to house to house up there. I've seen the kids grow up and move away. Some of the kids have actually moved back," said Holland.

He delivered letters, bills, and packages to homes and businesses in every end of Chattanooga. Like any job, Holland has those memorable days, even ones that stick out in a 50 year career.

"The day I got bit by the Border Callie - the lady kept telling me it won't bite but it was latched onto my thigh. People will tell you their dogs will not bite. Well, if they have teeth they will bite," said Holland.

Holland said one time he even helped police chase down a thief. He braved all the elements, from snow his first day in Highland Park to downpours.

"When I got in that afternoon I told them I will not be back because I just wore out and I was soaking wet. Next day though I showed back up," said Holland.

After half a century of delivering, Holland will load up his truck for one last time on Good Friday.
