This panel discussion program looks at ways in which local healthcare professionals can reduce the incidence of hepatitis B infection in their communities and support those living with chronic hepatitis B.

The prevalence of chronic hepatitis B in Australia is increasing. Current estimates suggest that 1% of the population, approximately 220,000 people are now affected. Of further concern is that 30% of those living with chronic hepatitis B are believed to be undiagnosed.

There are particular "at risk" population groups which have a high prevalence of chronic hepatitis B in Australia. These include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, migrant communities, and people born in high prevalence regions of the world, prison populations, and intravenous drug users.

It is known by health professionals that greater screening, vaccination and pro-active diagnosis and management of hepatitis B, prevent chronic liver disease and liver cancer.

Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) is now the fastest increasing cause of cancer in Australia. Significant progress has been made in Australia in preventing the incidence of the Hepatitis B Virus infection through infant and adolescent catch-up vaccination programs and advances in public health policy, with the endorsement of Australia's first National Hepatitis B Strategy in 2010.
