As gay men, we’ve all heard the term “internalized homophobia.” But what does it actually mean?

To understand it, we need to start with external homophobia—the negative messages about being gay that come from religion, media, family, and society at large. These messages often paint homosexuality as wrong, sinful, or shameful. Over time, when we absorb these views and begin to believe them ourselves, they become internalized.

And the truth is: every gay man wrestles with this to some degree, often rooted in the rejection experienced during adolescence.

🧠 But Doesn’t Coming Out Fix It?
Coming out can be powerful—and for many, it’s a turning point. Acceptance can help dissolve some of the shame. But even after coming out, living openly, and embracing gay identity, remnants of internalized homophobia often remain. Shame doesn’t disappear overnight.

🛠 The Good News: It’s Learned—So It Can Be Unlearned
Internalized homophobia isn’t something you were born with. It was taught. And like any harmful belief system, it can be unlearned.

Think about it this way: You’ve rejected plenty of ideas in your life that didn’t resonate with you. Why not apply that same discernment to the beliefs you’ve absorbed about your sexuality?

Recognize what you’ve internalized
Reflect on where those beliefs came from
Rebuild your belief system—on your own terms
→ Ask yourself: What do I love about being gay?
