Ababu Namwamba, fully Ababu Tawfiq Pius Namwamba, is a prominent Kenyan lawyer, politician, and public servant. He currently serves as the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Sports and the Arts, and has previously held key government roles, including Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Known for his legal expertise, strong advocacy for youth and human rights, and his role in shaping Kenya’s sports and cultural agenda, Namwamba is a highly influential figure in modern Kenyan politics.
• Ababu Namwamba was born on 23 December 1975 in Jinja, Uganda, to Kenyan parents. His family later moved back to Kenya amid political turmoil in Uganda.
o He earned his Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from the University of Nairobi.
o He holds a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Law from American University, Washington College of Law in the U.S.
o He also completed a Diploma in Legal Practice from the Kenya School of Law.
• In 2012, he was awarded the Order of the Elder of the Golden Heart (EGH), one of Kenya’s highest civilian honors.
Before his full-time political career, Namwamba was a public interest lawyer, focusing on international human rights and constitutional law. He founded and led The Chambers of Justice, a public interest legal trust, and concurrently ran his own law firm.
Some of his legal achievements:
• In 2004, he won a landmark case defending a Kenyan-born Pakistani man wrongfully accused of terrorism.
• Also in 2004, he successfully litigated for the rights of children living with HIV/AIDS to attend public schools, challenging discriminatory school policies.
• He has participated in international forums, advocating for fair trade, debt relief for Africa, and human rights at global platforms like the World Social Forum.
• For his public interest work, he received the Global Justice Award (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and was inducted as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2009.
Namwamba founded the Ababu Namwamba Foundation, a charity focused on empowering youth and strengthening communities through three key pillars: education, talent development, and economic empowerment.
• The foundation provides scholarships to underprivileged students and supports mentorship programs.
