⚠️ BroadLink RM4 Pro Setup — What FINALLY Worked

Quick follow-up after filming this — because my first impression of the setup process was… not great. The hardware itself is now running beautifully in my greenhouse automation, but getting there took some trial and error. If you’re stuck in pairing loops, this is the sequence that actually worked:

✅ Why the Wi-Fi setup feels so strange

• You MUST manually join the BroadLink’s temporary Wi-Fi network first on your phone. It acts like a little hotspot so your phone can “introduce” it to your home Wi-Fi. If you skip this, nothing works.

• While you’re connected to that temporary network, your phone is basically handing the BroadLink your home Wi-Fi name and password.

• After that, the BroadLink shuts its own network off and joins your house Wi-Fi — so your phone has to reconnect back to your normal network to find it again.

If your phone jumps networks at the wrong time (or never joins the BroadLink network in the first place), you just go in circles.

✅ 1. Hard reset and confirm pairing mode
The BroadLink has multiple LED blink patterns. Only the rapid blink is the correct EZ pairing mode. Slow blinking or count cycles are different modes — don’t assume it stayed paired.

✅ 2. Fix your phone Wi-Fi first
My phone was half the problem.

• Force connection to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (not 5 GHz or combined networks).
• Forget nearby saved networks so your phone doesn’t auto-jump away mid-setup.
• Reconnect cleanly before opening the app.

✅ 3. Use the BroadLink app FIRST (no Alexa shortcuts)
Alexa will send you into a loop if the device isn’t already onboarded.

• Confirm rapid blink.
• Open BroadLink app → Add Device.
• Stay inside the app and let it finish — don’t bounce into phone Wi-Fi menus unless prompted.

When it works, the LED behavior changes — that’s your confirmation it joined the network.

✅ 4. Restart the app if pairing partially fails
Earlier attempts “half registered” the device. Closing and reopening the app cleared that state.

✅ 5. Verify control before Alexa
Make sure you can manually control the device inside BroadLink first.

Only then:

✅ 6. Add Alexa integration
Open Alexa → Discover Devices → Test commands.

Once connected? Completely different experience. Schedules fire instantly and automation has been rock solid ever since.

Great hardware. Rough instructions. Hopefully this saves someone a couple hours of colourful language 🙂

🔥 Part 2 — BroadLink + Diesel Heater Pairing (The Steps INSIDE the App That Actually Matter)

Because the diesel heater side has its own learning curve. The hardware works beautifully once connected, but the important part isn’t just Wi-Fi… it’s what you do inside the BroadLink app itself.

Here’s what finally worked for me:

✅ 1. Add Device → Don’t Rush the Selection Screen
Inside BroadLink choose Add Device → Universal Remote / IR Device (RM4 Pro) or the appropriate hub option. Don’t just hit automatic scan — manually confirm the device type.

✅ 2. Confirm the Hub is Online FIRST
Before touching the heater:

• Make sure the BroadLink hub shows online in the app.
• Test it by sending ANY command or checking status.

If the hub isn’t solidly connected yet, heater pairing will fail later.

✅ 3. Add Appliance → Manual Learning Mode

Inside the BroadLink hub:

Device → Add Appliance → User Defined / Learn Remote

This part matters.

You’re basically teaching BroadLink to become the heater remote.

✅ 4. Teach Each Button Slowly

When learning commands:

• Hold the heater remote steady and close to the BroadLink.
• Press ONE button at a time.
• Wait for confirmation before moving on.

Rushing this causes missed or weak signals later.

✅ 5. Test Every Command Immediately

After learning:

• Power ON
• Power OFF
• Temp up/down


Test right away while you’re still in setup. Fix problems now — not after building routines.

✅ 6. Only Then Build Automation

Schedules, Alexa routines, or greenhouse automation come LAST.

Once learned properly, response has been instant and extremely reliable.

Great system once configured — but the app assumes you already know the order of operations. Hopefully this saves someone else some trial and error 👍.
