In rural areas of China, there are many taboos and customs when digging a grave for the elderly who have passed away :

Site Selection

Direction :
The direction is often selected according to feng shui concepts. In many places, a north-facing and south-facing orientation is preferred, which implies that the deceased can rest in peace and conform to the natural aura !

Terrain :
High and dry terrain is favored to avoid water accumulation and ensure the good preservation of the coffin. The soil texture is preferably firm and fine, ensuring the long-term stability of the grave !

Surrounding Environment :
It should be quiet, away from noisy places and inauspicious locations. A terrain surrounded by mountains and water is considered ideal !

Time

Digging Time :
The time for digging the grave is often chosen based on the birth date and time of death of the deceased. Moreover, it is usually done during the day !

Taboos on Inauspicious Days :
Some traditional inauspicious days should be avoided, such as Tomb-sweeping Day (in some local customs, Tomb-sweeping Day is mainly for sweeping old graves rather than digging new ones), the first and fifteenth days of each lunar month and other religious festivals. It is considered unlucky to break ground on these days !

Dimensions

Depth :
The depth of the grave pit varies according to different regions and customs. Generally, it is about 1.5 to 3 meters deep, ensuring that the coffin is buried deep enough, which embodies the meaning of "resting in peace in the earth" !

Length and Width :
The length and width of the pit are slightly larger than those of the coffin. The length is usually 0.5 to 1 meter longer than that of the coffin, and the width is 0.3 to 0.5 meter wider than that of the coffin. Ground-breaking Ceremony :
In some places, there will be a simple ground-breaking ceremony. It is usually presided over by the elders of the family or a feng shui master. The first spade of earth is dug at the selected site, and some words are murmured, such as praying for the protection of the God of the Earth and informing the deceased that they will rest here !
