(6 Mar 2018) The Quarter Pounder is getting a fresh makeover: McDonald's is now serving Quarter Pounders with fresh beef rather than frozen patties at about a quarter of its U.S. restaurants.
The fast-food giant hopes to appeal to customers who want fresher foods.
And by May it plans to roll out fresh beef Quarter Pounders to most of its 14,000 U.S. restaurants.
The restaurant, which has relied on frozen patties since the 1970s, said workers will cook up the fresh beef on a grill when the burger is ordered.
Its pricier burgers stuffed with guacamole or bacon, called "Signature Crafted" burgers, will also be made with fresh beef since they use the same-sized patty as Quarter Pounders, but the Big Mac and other burgers will still be made with the frozen beef.
The change is the latest as McDonald's seeks to shed its junk food image.
From removing artificial preservatives from Chicken McNuggets, it will also be replacing the apple juice in Happy Meals with one with less sugar.
For the last two years, McDonald's has been testing the fresh beef Quarter Pounders, the approach first hitting Dallas and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
But eight more cities are serving it now, including Atlanta, Miami and Salt Lake City. Over the next month, several more cities will be added to this list, including Denver, Houston and Seattle.
