Ely's town centre is a delightful and compact area, perfect for exploring on foot. At its heart stands the magnificent Ely Cathedral, a breathtaking example of medieval architecture. Known as the "Ship of the Fens," its towering presence and unique Octagon lantern are visible for miles across the flat landscape, and a visit inside to admire the stained glass and engineering is a must. The cathedral precinct itself is a pleasant area for a walk, with a collection of historic buildings adding to the charming atmosphere.

Beyond the cathedral, the town centre offers a mix of history, culture, and independent shops. Oliver Cromwell's House, a half-timbered building where the Lord Protector once lived, is a major draw.
