Tchaikovsky was one of Leopold Stokowski's favourite composers and he championed his music in concert and on records throughout his entire career. He had made the first American recording of the '1812' Overture on 78s in 1930 with the Philadelphia Orchestra and included it in an all-Russian programme in 1969. The concert was given in a sold-out Royal Albert Hall by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Band of the Grenadier Guards, with cannon shots from the gallery causing the audience to jump in their seats. For good measure, Stokowski brought the massive RAH organ in for the work's final pages, thus ensuring a tumultuous ovation at the end.
