Health workers across India on Monday refused to end protests and declined to see non-emergency patients following the Aug. 9 killing of a 31-year-old medic, who police say was raped and murdered at a hospital in the eastern city of Kolkata where she was a trainee.

"This is not (only) a rape of a doctor, but the rape of a daughter. She was a daughter, someone's sister, so if we do not raise a voice for ourselves, then no one ever will. For this, we are here," said protester Rajni.

"We just want the demands of the doctors to be fulfilled. These are not just demands of a doctor but those of the countries’ daughters. Until (the) CPA (Central Protection Act) is implemented (for doctors), we will not stop protesting," said protester Ishita Agrawal.

The incident has left the slain woman's colleagues mentally and emotionally traumatized, with one of them saying, "Like for us, we can say that we, all the female residents especially, we are just scared to enter the department...because if the security is same like before, then anyone can be attacked now. Anyone can be attacked any day."
