North of South Island, New Zealand

I find travelling enjoyable, emotional, and educational. After starting my work at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, in July 2023, Jaco and I decided to spend the summer break (deep December 2023) travelling the northern part of the South Island (Christchurch is on the South Island):

▶️ Christchurch ➡️ Kaikōura ➡️ Blenheim ➡️ Nelson ➡️ Murchison ➡️ Westport [via Arthur's Pass] ▶️ Christchurch

It was an exciting journey, connecting with people, indigenous values, multiculturalism, sustainable environments, agriculture (and its impact), wildlife (mostly birds and marine life), and perhaps most interestingly – societies and infrastructure often re-engineered following various earthquakes. Of course, in this small world, I also met a number of engineering graduates (alumni) from my former institutions in South Africa.

In reflection, particularly after COVID-19, it makes one think about the multiple uncertainties of the future and one’s resilience journey.
