Main reason I didn't modify backband in past was rumor of possible damage to boat by placing sideways pressure on seat bolt holes. I asked Josh at Pyranha, and here is his reply:

As far as that technique of backband retention goes, I don't think the webbing would be putting too much pressure on the bolts, we actually used to have a metal clip that attached there for the exact same purpose on some of our older outfitting at one point. Personally I am a fan of using webbing like this for a backband retainer as it's much more comfortable on the shoulder when carrying than the old metal pieces I just mentioned, and also easily replaceable and serviceable with stuff I generally have around the garage or in the back of my car. If you like the way it sets the backrest, I say go for it.
