The Saint Lucia National Trust is working together with the Department of Fisheries, the Marine Police Unit and the Crime Scene Investigation Unit of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force in response to the slaughter of a nesting hawksbill sea turtle. The Hawksbill, a species of turtle in St Lucia which is classified as endangered was found viciously slaughtered on the shores of Sandy Beach. A mature female hawksbill turtle was killed between the evening of Monday, 12th June and the early hours of Tuesday, 13th, June, 2016.

GVD news spoke to the Program officer of the St Lucia National Trust, Mr. Craig Henry who gave us more insight into this latest incident.

Mr. Henry spoke of the importance of turtle nesting and how closely it is being monitored in St Lucia. He went on to remind St Lucians that the turtle nesting season is over and also made mention of the laws used to protect the turtles.

The perpetrators were able the live the scene with the turtle meat and the mature eggs living behind approximately 200 immature eggs, the carcass and the shell. The public is encouraged to get involved in conserving efforts to help protect this endangered species.
