Centralization refers to the concentration of political power and decision-making authority in the hands of the central government.

In a centralized system, the national government holds the majority of political authority while the local or regional governments have little independent power and they operate largely under the direction or control of the central state.

Centralized authority means that laws, policies, and administration are managed and decided primarily at the national level.

It is typically a feature of unitary states such as France where sovereignty resides with a single central authority.

Sub-national bodies may exist but are often administrative arms rather than autonomous entities.

Centralization is often justified for promoting national unity, uniformity, and efficiency in governance.

However, it can also lead to problems such as bureaucratic overreach, disconnection from local needs, and reduced democratic participation at the local level.
