In honor of Jennie Malan’s wishes, Tami Chelew and I (Matt Jarvinen) would like to share the following video from a recent ISTDP San Diego online event. It includes recorded excerpts from the 2023 David Malan Memorial Conference, originally hosted in London by ISTDP-UK (organized by Alexandra Knowles, Jennie Malan, and Robert Neborsky).

(00:00) - The video begins with "A Conversation with David Malan," which includes an interview with Dr. David Malan by Dr. Robert Neborsky and Dr. Patricia Coughlin from an ISTDP summer school in Whistler, British Columbia in 2010.

Highlights from the interview:
*David's first impressions of Davanloo's work (involving "horror")
*How his impressions changed in light of the effectiveness and the patient reports of what was effective
*His eventual falling out with Davanloo and the factors which contributed to that
*His experience ghost-writing "Unlocking the Unconscious"
*His experience of Anna Freud
*His experience in analysis with Winnicott
*His experience interviewing Winnicott's patients

(40:00) - At the end of the interview, the video shows recorded comments that Jennie Malan shared at the 2023 Memorial conference that she also wanted to be shared with the EDT community. This includes a few clarifications about David's comments and a brief commentary on "What Made David Special."

(54:20) - Comments from the ISTDP San Diego online audience then follow, including their reactions to hearing about Dr. Malan's life and contributions, as well as some final comments from Jennie Malan.

(1:06:13) - The video concludes with a slideshow about Dr. Malan from the ISTDP-UK conference (shown during a break at the ISTDP San Diego event). This includes photos of him, his family, his trainees, and his books, as well as his most memorable quotations which demonstrate his values and contributions.
