Hello everyone, In today's Mango video we will explore the topic of removing young grafted mango flowers.

The reason why we remove young grafted mango flowers is to re-focus the energy towards growing more mango leaves and a stronger root system/ tree to support growing a bigger tree and better fruit.

Grafted mango trees are able to flower & fruit at a very young age. Although this is amazing to witness it is not the best in the longevity of your mango tree especially if it is under a year old.

By clipping the mango flowers (mango panicle) and leaving about one inch we will take off the stress of our young grafted mango trees and re-focus the energy towards the root system. This will then re-focus the energy and make it send out new flushes of growth, typically after April - May.

You will want to tip this new growth that is sent out typically after April-May to start training your mango canopy - I love a bushy compact mango canopy.

The reason we don't remove the full mango panicle is that this will only make the mango tree send out new flowers to replace those just removed (assuming we removed the whole panicle). By leaving a little bit this will make the mango relax and start focusing energy to making new growth.

This is debated among mango growers, but this method of growing mangos has worked for me in the past as well as worked for many mango growers that I know.

Mangos regardless will grow even if you decide to fruit them, they might just be a little bit stunted in the following years - but each to their own when growing mangos there is no right or wrong way.
