Hamad Youssef Nazzal taught in the U.S. for 11 years before moving back to northeastern Jordan in 2016. Upon his return, he began building an eco-friendly mud home. Nazzal reportedly completed the frame of the house in 2 years and worked for an additional 3 years building the rest of the structure out of mud, barley, straw, ash, and goat hair. He says that because of the materials the house is constructed of, the building ‘breathes.’ The building is also eco-friendly due to the lack of concrete and other harmful materials. Nazzal says his house is the first modern building made of mud. He says the house has become a sort of tourist destination for people who ‘want to see the modern interpretation of the old.’ Nazzal shares his experience in constructing the home with people who visit from inside and outside of Jordan.
