What Causes Watery Eyes In Dogs?

Your dog’s tears can be from allergies. It could be mainly due to allergies to the protein in his food. Also, he might have other health issues. Such as irritating eyelashes or other eye diseases. Sometimes severe periodontitis can spread bacteria over the gums and irritate the eyes.

How To Prevent Tear Stains In Dogs?

No 1. Provide Proper Food

Switching his foods could eliminate tear stains. Tear stains could be a sign of allergies to the protein in his food. Talk to your vet about changing his food with other proteins or hydrolyzed food.

No 2. Clean The Eye Area

It’s good to wipe the eye area with saline solution or eye drops at least twice a day. Also, don’t forget to trim long hair around the eyes. Brown tear stains from yeast infections can smell and lead to other eye or skin problems. In this case, take your dog to a vet.

No 3. Give Him Tear Stain Supplement

Reddish-brown tear stains are due to porphyrin in tears. Check with a vet if your dog has other health issues. If not, tear stain supplement may help.

No 4. Keep Eye-irritating Factors Away

If your dog’s eyelashes irritate his eyes too much, your vet may recommend a surgery. Also, exposure to perfume or smoke can be an eye-irritating factor. Keep him away from it.
