Come with me on a little walk through a tropical meditation space designed four years ago and now gloriously settled into its dappled, dreamlike canopy.

The philosophy behind this garden was to prepare the mind for meditation. Every element was chosen to encourage mindfulness and reflection, from the stepping stones that slow your pace as you enter, to the rhythmic lines of Millboard decking laid in widening oblongs that stretch and cross like thoughts meandering through calm water.

At either end of these floating platforms are hammocks, but not tied to trees. We designed dedicated posts for them, because although tying hammocks to trees is romantic, it can harm the tree by compressing the cambium and interfering with water flow. This way, we protect the structure and spirit of the space.

A mature cherry tree provides high canopy and shade, while the garden’s entrance is gently framed by two Heptacodium miconioides, inviting you in with their elegant form. The planting scheme is full of tropical-looking yet hardy plants, chosen for their foliage, texture and ability to evoke calm, without demanding too much from the gardener.

The result is a garden that doesn’t shout. It asks you to slow down, take notice, and breathe.
