#pridemonth “The repeal of ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ I feel like was very liberating for soldiers who were afraid, who were experiencing a little bit of that bias…” said U.S. Army First Lt. Brittney Poore the Engineers Plans Officer with the Delaware National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters unit.

In 2011, "Don't ask, don't tell" was repealed from the official United States policy on military service by gay men, bisexuals, and lesbians.

“I came out when I was 14,” said Poore. “I came into the military knowing I couldn’t really be who I was but, the funny thing about it was there were a lot of gay people in my basic training and I’m still friends with most of them.”

Poore joined the military in 2006 at 17 years old. From her service in Iraq in 2007, the strong leadership experience from the @153rd_mp_co_dearng, and her 12 years as an enlisted soldier, she found that her soldiers needed guidance.

“The enlisted soldiers deserved better and were lacking that strong leadership figure…I have a background in helping people…it’s just in my nature.”

So in 2016 Poore went to OCS to be an officer to make a difference.

“I have had a lot of soldiers ask me, How do I talk to my family about this? How do I talk to my leadership about this? Is it the right time? I tell them to just be YOU.”
