Strep A, or Group A Streptococcus (GAS), is a common type of bacteria that can cause various infections, ranging from mild to severe. It is commonly found on the skin or in the throat and can cause illnesses such as strep throat, scarlet fever, impetigo, and cellulitis. Strep A infections are spread by close contact with an infected person, through respiratory droplets, and direct skin contact. Symptoms of a strep A infection can include flu-like symptoms, sore throat, rash, scabs and sores, pain and swelling, severe muscle aches, and nausea and vomiting.
Most strep A infections are mild and can be easily treated with antibiotics. However, in some cases, the infection can lead to more serious conditions, such as invasive group A strep (iGAS) infections, which may require hospital treatment. Complications from strep throat can include abscesses, sinus infections, ear infections, rheumatic fever, and post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis.
