Pictures and some info about making a large fixed steady for my Chinese GH1440 Lathe. The steady supplied with the machine is pathetically small.
I made the new steady using an old car disk brake rotor, offcuts of 25mm square hollow section steel, some brass rod I cast from old kitchen taps and aluminium rod cast from a suzuki gearbox housing.
I could not weld to the cast iron brake rotor so there was lots of drilling, tapping and buying bolts. Bolting it together is possibly a better way to do it because you can adjust the finger clearances using the slop in the bolt holes.
I faced the 25mm SHS sides in my small mill drill, but after one finger jammed due to weld distortion I found you can easily do the same with a flat bastard file, a vice and some patience.

I will make some more fingers with roller bearing tips, because I found that the brass tips quickly run out of lube oil and 'sings' so loud it hurts my ears.
One day when time permits I will also cut the ring in half and hinge the top half, but for now I can do the hydraulic cylinder repairs with it as is.
