"Split-ticketing" is a quirk of the semi-privatised rail system in the UK whereby a train journey can be cheaper if you buy two tickets for a journey, rather than one - so if you're going from A to C you can sometimes save by buying a ticket A to B and another from B to C.
I needed to go from Southend-on-Sea in Essex to Lowestoft in Suffolk, and discovered via the ScotRail website that I could save nearly £11 by "split-ticketing" at Hatfield Peverel.
The only condition of travelling "split-ticket" is that your train has to stop at the point B in my example - you don't have to alight there.
I chose to do so, in order to find out what I could about Hatfield Peverel, a small place I'd never been to before.
There are websites that specialise in "split-ticketing" and some charge a commision for saving you money. The ScotRail website also shows "split-ticket" options where they exist, and don't charge you commission. Station ticket office staff are allowed to sell "split-tickets" but don't always know the more obscure combinations, however some are common knowledge.
