Before he wielded cosmic power, Gabriel Lan was a noble officer of the Nova Corps, a decorated warrior and leader from Xandar. Unlike many warriors, he wasn’t driven by ego or conquest. Lan was burdened by the weight of war and disillusioned by the empire he served. He longed for something more—something beyond battlefields and bureaucracy.
That “something” came in the form of Galactus.
Abducted by the Devourer’s ship after a mysterious encounter in space, Lan was given the opportunity to become Galactus’s herald and see the farthest corners of the universe. Lan embraced the unknown. He became Air-Walker, soaring across galaxies, not as a destroyer, but as an explorer—a cosmic scout who learned not just about distant worlds, but about the being he served.
And Galactus changed, too. Air-Walker’s loyalty, compassion, and strength of spirit affected him deeply. Their shared conversations formed a bond that would alter the way Galactus viewed mortals. But cosmic relationships are not eternal.
When Galactus was weakened by hunger and ambushed by a hostile alien race, Air-Walker sacrificed his life defending him. This act of devotion shook Galactus to his core. In a rare act of grief and desperation, Galactus tried to bring Air-Walker back—recreating him as an android shell. But the soul, the spark, the friendship was gone. The automation wasn’t Gabriel Lan. It was only a memory.
When the automaton was destroyed by the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer, Galactus lost the last trace of his friend. For a being known for destruction and apathy, the loss of Air-Walker revealed something deeply unexpected: Galactus can feel sorrow.
