How to force a top freezer refrigerator into defrost if the freezer is full of frost and ice, and not cooling properly. Advance defrost timer with a screwdriver. #shorts. Older basic top-mount refrigerators of any brand have a mechanical defrost timer, that can get stuck in a cooling mode and never switch to a defrost. This creates too much frost and ice accumulation on the freezer evaporator coils. So the refrigerator stops cooling even though the compressor is running. If you turn the timer clockwise, and the defrost mode works, replace the timer and your fridge problem is fixed!
