The Kerala High Court has issued a 15-day interim stay on the release of The Kerala Story 2, just a day before its scheduled premiere. Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas observed that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) appeared not to have applied its mind while granting clearance. The petitions argued that the film’s title and narrative could incite communal disharmony by falsely associating Kerala with terrorism and forced conversions. The Court emphasized that while it usually avoids interfering with film releases, it must act when content has the potential to disrupt harmony.

Written by Amarnath Jha and Vipul Amrutlal Shah, and directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, the sequel expands beyond Kerala to depict alleged radicalization across Indian states. The controversy mirrors the storm around The Kerala Story (2023), which faced criticism for its portrayal of forced conversions. With the CBFC now directed to reconsider its certification, the film’s release remains on hold, sparking debates on freedom of expression versus reasonable restrictions under Article 19 of the Constitution.
