Cross-Pennine rivalries are rekindled in the WNBL Division Two final as hometown Manchester Mystics II take on Sheffield Hatters II.
It’s unlikely the D2W showpiece has ever contained as many accolades as it does this weekend, with the Hatters roster sporting some of the most decorated players in WNBL history.
Ann Zammit and Ann ‘Jimmy’ Jamieson have both been winning trophies with the Hatters for decades, with 2014/15 WBBL MVP Steph Gandy also in the mix. Sarah Cooney (nee Naylor) was crowned the North conference Player of the Week this past week, while Lisa Riches (nee Hutchinson, 12pts) and Katie Crowley (34pts) both shone in the semi-final win over South conference winners Brent Bulls.
Fourteen-time D1W winners and 17-time WNBL National Cup champs, the Hatters haven’t claimed a D2W playoff title since way back in 2007/08 when they beat Black Country Bears 67-51.
It didn’t always seem a shoo-in that they’d reach this stage either, with a 13-3 record in the regular season that led to a second-place finish in the North conference.
That was still a spot higher than their opponents Manchester, however. Enjoying a first season back in the WNBL set up, the Mystics went 11-5 before turning it on in the playoffs to make a real name for themselves.
